Sustainable concepts from Sharp at the Hanover Trade Fair 2008
20:58 - 10 мая 2008 года At this year´s Hanover Trade Fair, Sharp Electronics presents developments, studies, and products related to energy savings and CO2-free energy generation. On over 200 square metres, at stand A30, hall 27, this electronics company, as partner of this year´s guest country Japan, demonstrates its leading role as an environmentally conscious company. Here, technologies with the objectives of manufacturing environmentally friendly products, and of generating renewable energy, take centre stage. Environmentally advanced city, office building, house, and environmentally advanced production: for each of these four areas of life, the LCD and solar technology leader is exhibiting individual future-oriented energy solutions. Sharp is committed to an environmentally aware future, and with its new energy-saving products, its sale of solar cells, and intelligent production, Sharp is making an active contribution to global reduction of CO2 emissions.
For Sharp, preservation of the natural necessities of life is a challenge equally as important as high product quality, profitability of the company, and social responsibility. Sustainable concepts and actions characterise this electronics company and its worldwide environmental strategy. For instance, the specially developed "Sharp Green Product Guideline" guarantees continual improvement of environmentally relevant product characteristics. The environmental management system ensures a consistently high level of environmental protection worldwide, and is implemented in all production sites and almost all branches. Sharp´s social responsibility and protection of the environment are at the core of the company´s activities, in all areas, and with an eye on the future.
Sharp´s technologies set environmental benchmarks In recent years, a number of Sharp LCD televisions have made an "ecological name" for themselves. In the year 2005, a Sharp television was the first flat-screen TV to be awarded the EU eco-label, a special environmental commendation from the European Commission. There are now more than 40 Sharp LCDs which proudly bear this label.
With its new LCD technologies, Sharp not only achieves high picture quality and super-slim design, but also impressive environmental performance, with a sophistication oriented towards the "LCD televisions of the future". The current LCD TV prototype combines Sharp´s unique LCD technologies with unparalleled performance: only 20mm thick, with contrast values of 100,000:1, combined with an annual energy consumption of 140kWh for a 52-inch LCD television. With almost 50 years of experience in photovoltaics, Sharp is the leader in innovation and technology for solar products Already in 1959, Sharp began research and development in the field of photovoltaics, and started mass production of solar cells as early as 1963. The first application of Sharp´s solar cells was on Japanese lighthouses in 1966. They were then used on satellites in 1976. To this day, Sharp has produced solar cells with a total capacity of around two gigawatts, and every fourth solar cell produced worldwide is from the solar pioneer. All around the globe, demand for solar energy is growing rapidly. Sharp already identified the potential of solar energy half a century ago, and today it sees solar energy as a key factor along the way towards a society with minimal CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, Sharp continues to act as the driving force for intensive implementation of photovoltaics.
Sustainable living in the future Sharp´s concept of an environmentally advanced city envisages the use of solar cells in a wide variety of applications: covering the entire surface of house roofs, in buildings´ facades, or as energy supplies for light sources. In Sharp´s concept, solar energy becomes the integrated energy source of the city of the future. At the same time, energy-saving household products minimise electricity consumption, while electricity is being generated simultaneously with renewable energy.
Production in harmony with nature Development and construction of state-of-the-art factories is a highly significant aspect of Sharp´s environmental strategy. These factories should minimise environmental impact, and operate in harmony with the environment. The LCD TV production facility in Kameyama is a prime example. Here, a third of the energy required is generated by a combination of environmentally friendly technologies – with cogeneration systems based on natural gas, with fuel cells, and by means of one of the world´s largest photovoltaic plants. Thus, the CO2 emissions of the factory are greatly reduced.
The new 21st-century industrial complex in Sakai, Japan, will start operations in 2010. Here, for the first time anywhere in the world, solar cells and LCD panels will be produced together. This enables Sharp to utilise the industrial complex´s synergies, and to avoid unnecessary transport distances. And when it comes to environmental innovations, Sakai will even out-perform Kameyama II.
